Determiner
  • Definition

    • consist of subsets of the parts of speech

    • a word or a phrase that typically precedes a noun and offers grammatical information about the noun

    • articles fall into the determiner category

    • may also include quantifiers that quantify nouns  (many, several, few, some, all, etc.)

    • includes demonstratives  (this, that, these, those)

    • a personal possessive pronoun that modifies a noun may also be classified as a determiner  ("my book")

  • Examples

    • used with countable nouns

      • a couple of, a few, a great many, a large number of, a small number of, both, each, every, few, many, not many, quite a few, several, one, two (etc.)

    • used with non-countable nouns

      • a lot, a great deal of, a large amount of, an large amount of, a little, much, not much, little, quite a little, some

    • used with countable nouns or non-countable nouns

      • all, a lot of, lots of, any, enough, hardly any, most, no, none of, not any, plenty of, some
