Age Discrimination in Asia

When are the owners of the English language schools in Asia going to wake up and realize that age should not be the determining factor for hiring English teachers?

I am approaching 50 years of age and hold a B.A. Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Linguistics. I taught English in U.S. public schools for over 15 years until making the decision to teach English abroad. I wanted a change of scenery and planned to teach in Asia while experiencing the sights and sounds of other cultures.

My job search began about 4 months ago and has been an unbelievably frustrating experience. I really want to teach in Japan but most of the schools won’t even consider you as a potential candidate unless you are under 35 years old. Other Asian countries have similar age restrictions with the exception of China.

Some English language schools in China will even except teachers up to 60 years old. I can only think this is based on the simple economic principle of supply and demand and these schools are desperate to find any teacher who can speak English with anything even close to resembling a native accent. Quite honestly, China is not really where I choose to teach but, at this point, it seems like my only choice.
