Community Education Officer

Global Vision International are working in partnership with Kenya Wildlife Service and Kwale District Education Department. Our Community Development Programme, based in a coastal community on Wasini Island, delivers Kenyan National Curriculum based English language lessons in Mkwiro Primary School utilising trained Expedition Members as Assistant Teachers with an emphasis on small group work within classes. Environmental education, sports and arts programmes are also offered in the school and local orphanage. Adult education classes are delivered covering English language, environmental education, health and skills development. Our capacity building programme supports the development of innovative and sustainable alternative livelihoods.
The position involves: training of volunteers in GVI's Introduction to TEFL course; development, planning and implementation of our community education programme; liaison with local partners; expedition logistics; budgeting; maintenance of high health and safety standards; and assisting the marine and coastal forest research programmes. Commencing in January 2008.
Applicants should have a TEFL qualification, teaching qualification, first aid qualification and teaching experience. Experience in environmental education and sustainable development preferred. Swahili language, international driving licence, RYA level 2 power boat certification and EFR Instructor qualification are advantageous.
All food and accommodation are provided. Starting salary at US $100 per week, with flight contribution offered. Comprehensive medical insurance must be obtained by applicant. Living conditions are basic, without running water and with limited electricity, and cultural sensitivity must be observed. However the community relationships we have developed and the unspoilt beauty of the area are highly rewarding. Our research programmes include dolphin population studies in the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Protected Area and Colobus monkey research in the coastal forest, a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.
