Native English Speaking Teachers for 2008-09
Posted By: American School of Pachuca
Date: March 7, 2008
The American School of Pachuca, a co-educational, private, not-for-profit school with nearly 900 students, high in the mountainous mining city of Pachuca, Mexico, seeks several qualified educators for the next academic year.
The school offers competitive salaries of between 11,000 and 15,000 pesos per month depending upon experience and academic background, and provides private furnished local housing, airfare assistance to and from Mexico, and several significant cash bonuses to those who join our faculty. We also offer small classes, an American curriculum and textbooks, professional development opportunities, medical insurance, and a collegial atmosphere where teachers have a great opportunity to grow and develop.
Founded in the early 1900´s by an American mining company for children of miners, and later becoming a private, not-for-profit, the school is among the best known in Pachuca, and one of only 17 schools that form the prestigious Association for American Schools in Mexico. As such, the campus is replete with activities, ranging from soccer, to volleyball, to basketball, to model United Nations, chess, math club, French, dance, and more. The campus has wireless internet, a spacious teachers´ lounge, two football fields, two basketball courts, two electronic whiteboards, and we are nearing completion of a brand new library and media center.
Pachuca is 90 minutes from Mexico City and its historic Zocalo, 45 minutes from the ancient Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan, and 3 hours from the beaches of the Eastern coast of Mexico. It is a mid-sized city of nearly 400,000 people, more than 98% Mexican, and offers all the amenities one needs, including shopping, art, music, theater, parks, and many other cultural activities. It is among the safest cities in Mexico, and is solidly middle-class with a growing economy, clean streets and excellent local transportation.
We seek teachers to fill positions of those staff members whose contracts will be complete at the end of this academic year, in the pre-school (pre-kinder through pre-primary), the primary school (grades 1-6), and the secondary school (grades 7-9). We have positions available for primary homeroom classes, music and art, and secondary math, science, social studies and PE. Teachers will sign a one-year contract with a year end bonus of $1200 US, will teach classes of no more than 24 students, and will teach a maximum of thirty, 45-minute contact periods per week (22 hours). Most teachers will teach significantly fewer periods.
Teachers must be native English speakers and must have a minimum of 1-2 years teaching experience at home or abroad. We prefer teachers from the US, Canada, England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to facilitate visa procurement (paid for and handled 100% by the school), but applicants from other English-speaking countries will also be considered.
A teaching certificate is highly preferable, but those who are not classroom certified will be offered the opportunity to join a M.Ed. program at a significantly reduced cost. As we are in the process of being internationally accredited, all faculty will be required to either have a teaching certificate OR enroll in a program leading to the necessary educational credits. The school will provide significant additional economic support for teachers it hires who choose the latter option.
To apply for a faculty position, please send your cover letter indicating what grade levels and subject matters you are interested in, an updated resume, the names and e-mail addresses of three professional references, and scanned copies of all relevant educational certifications to the International Hiring Coordinator, Mr. Curt Crossley, at teach.at.asp@gmail.com before March 25, 2008. Phone interviews will begin on a rolling basis on March 15, 2008 and will continue until all vacancies are filled.
