In this lesson you will learn the definition of a compound sentence and study examples of compound sentences.

Compound Sentence Definition

A compound sentence:
has two or more independent clauses or simple sentences which are connected using coordinate conjunctions like "and", "but" and "or"
is an effective way to show the relative importance of two pieces of information

Compound Sentence Examples

Mio eats breakfast and she goes to work.
Mio reads a book or she listens to the radio.
Note: the two parts of these compound sentences contain equally important pieces of information
Specifically, eating breakfast and going to work are equally important as are reading a book or listening to the radio
