Hi. In the classroom today you will learn about syllables.

What is a syllable?

A syllable is a part of a word that contains a single vowel sound.

When learning to pronounce English correctly, it is important to be able to separate words into syllables.

How many syllables are in the word TREE?

The answer is 1,  TREE.

How many syllables are in the word BUTTER?

The answer is 2, BUT-TER.

Use a dictionary and take some time to look up a few words.

You will notice the dictionary entries for words separate the words into syllables.

For example, the word PRONUNCIATION is listed in the dictionary as
PRO-NUN-CI-A-TION.

Notice there are five syllables in the word pro-nun-ci-a-tion.

Each syllable in the word pronunciation contains a single vowel sound.

Knowing the number of syllables in words will quickly improve your English pronunciation and your ability to speak English properly.

Until next time.
